Climate Change or Hot Spell

The water’s too green for me!

On a hot July weekend what could be more refreshing than spending time wading in a cool lake surrounded by tall cottonwood trees?  My chosen spot for this getaway was the Lahontan State Park with its 69 miles of shoreline, a favorite for nature lovers to camp, picnic and enjoy aquatic activities.

http://www.bonnierannald.com

Making a quick stop for picnic provisions, I headed out on Alt 95 to the Silver Springs entrance at the state park.  Verbal warnings came from the friendly ranger about the water level being up over many of the beaches and that a number of cars had gotten stuck driving in the lose sand.

http://www.bonnierannald.com

Parking in a shady spot, I gathered my camera and started to walk down to the day use area.  I noticed that the water was up to the benches on the picnic tables and that the BBQ grills were almost totally submerged.

How interesting I thought, but as I drew closer to the water I saw that it had the appearance of green pea soup!

http://www.bonnierannald.com

I picked up a bright yellow leaf to drop in the water for a macro shot and it was immediately sucked down and did not float.  I then realized what I was witnessing was a huge algal bloom.  This happens when sunlight and warmer temperatures accelerate the growth of blue-green algae, cyanobacteria, in water that has an over abundance of phosphorus and nitrogen from agricultural pesticides and fertilizers.

http://www.bonnierannald.com

Moving on to a northern cove and the scene looked like a set from the B rated “Swamp Thing”.  Any minute I expected to catch something from the corner of my eye rearing up from the murky depths.

http://www.bonnierannald.com

Making the adventure even creepier was the absence of water fowl, except for a lone killdeer.

http://www.bonnierannald.com

The flycatchers seemed to be doing well.

http://www.bonnierannald.com

The flycatchers must be dining on the abundance of dragonflies.

http://www.bonnierannald.com

The green pea soup water didn’t seem to bother anyone else.  Families were enjoying the day with jet skies and children were splashing about and having loads of fun.

http://www.bonnierannald.com

With record breaking hot summers and the warming climate, I wonder if this is the trend of things to come.  As for me, I’ll keep my camera dry and be content to just stroll along the shore.

http://www.bonnierannald.com

Join me for my next photo-adventure and as I’m out in nature, I will share with you my observations from behind the lens.  Check my website and order that special print to have a lasting moment in time with nature.

With my Nikon and tripod, my goal is to recreate the scene as it appears in nature, to preserve in a photographic image the awesome, yet simplistic beauty of the scene that waits around a bend or over a hill. Sometimes it's a colorful landscape, and many times I'm allowed in the presence of the numerous creatures that adapt to life in the wild.

What an exciting and interesting photo-adventure this day has been.  I love it when I am drawn to an area and not knowing what to expect I get treated to new experiences.

Photography places me in the moment where I can share that moment in time. It becomes a life story as represented by my interaction with the scene. The happiness and beauty or the sorrow and strife; how I focus leaves a lasting impression that might touch the viewer on a spiritual level.

Weber Reservoir and 2017 Spring Snowmelt

Recharging lakes, rivers and streams

Over the winter of 2016 – 2017, back-to-back storms in January and February brought more snow to the Sierra Nevada Mountains than in the last two decades. As a result, snowmelt in the spring is causing the lakes, rivers, streams and reservoirs to flow at an all time high.

http://www.bonnierannald.com

To prevent flooding along the banks of the Walker River, water is being released through the spillway at Weber Reservoir.

http://www.bonnierannald.com

What an exciting event to stand on the bridge during Earth Day weekend and feel the mighty force  of all this water rushing down.

http://www.bonnierannald.com

The additional water will recharge the ground water at Weber Reservoir which is on the Walker River Paiute Indian Reservation, located in Western Nevada. It will also flow to Walker Lake and bring much needed fresh water to this desert lake that has been at an all time low level.

Weber Reservoir supports a number of fresh water fish and provides a sanctuary for numerous birds and other wildlife.

The Optic Soul

International Exhibit of Photographic Arts in Paris, France

Opening on Earth Day 2017, I am honored to announce that selected images of my photography will are on exhibit in The Optic Soul at La Galerie Négatif Plus, 100-106-108 Rue la Fayette, 75010 Paris, France.

https://negatifplus.com/

Curator of The Optic Soul, Lyza Sahertian defines the exhibition as …  “What I try to show & communicate with the public is what we see within...the artists show what is their vision..."The Optic Soul".

https://negatifplus.com/

My photographs that were chosen to best represent the theme for The Optic Soul are 3 images taken at the White Sands National Monument in New Mexico:  “Graphic Sand”, “Morning Moon” and “Sand Totem”.

https://negatifplus.com/

Of the 3 photographs, the Sand Totem was the première image that started my journey in to the genre of fine art photography.  A lone yucca stands on the edge of a sand dune with clouds and mountains in the background.  What a compelling scene this was to come across in the vastness of the desert.

http://www.bonnierannald.com

During my sojourn at White Sands, I also was drawn to the graphic designs of wind on the sand dunes and coming upon the early morning solitude of the moon  just about to set behind a towering dune.

The Optic Soul exhibition of eleven international artists and photographers will run from April 19 to May 2, 2017.

If you happen to be in Paris, France during the days from 19 April to 2 May stop by La Galerie Négatif Plus for the artist visions in The Optic Soul.

Reflections at Lake Lahontan

World Water Day and memories of the Ancient Lake Lahontan

To commemorate World Water Day on March 22nd, I focused my photo-explorations on a day at Lake Lahontan.  Located in northwestern Nevada, the present day Lake Lahontan is named for the ancient Lake Lahontan which during the Pleistocene era covered 8,500 square miles (22,000 km2) of the western U.S.

http://www.bonnierannald.com

Today’s Lake Lahontan is a reservoir that was first constructed to provide irrigation for the surrounding farmlands.  During the past years of drought the water in Lake Lahontan had all but vanished.  However the wet winter in 2016 increased the water level back along the lake’s 69 miles (111 km) of shoreline.

http://www.bonnierannald.com

Present day Lake Lahontan with its willows and cottonwood trees provides a sanctuary for many types of wildlife and also offers a peaceful setting for people to enjoy nature.

http://www.bonnierannald.com

During the summer, the lake is busy with camping, fishing and boating; on this early spring afternoon, I had the lake all to myself except for an eared grebe that floated by in the calm water.

http://www.bonnierannald.com

A knocking up overhead and a red headed woodpecker was busy searching for insects on a giant cottonwood tree.

http://www.bonnierannald.com

Along the dead leaves, a robin scurried around hunting for dinner.

http://www.bonnierannald.com

As the shadows grew long, the light began to fade and more birds flew in to settle for the night.  What a better way to appreciate World Water Day than enjoying the moments at a lake that takes one back to earlier times in the Earth’s evolution.

http://www.bonnierannald.com

With the forecast of a wet spring, I am hoping that Lake Lahontan will continue to rise.  It will be interesting for a return visit in late spring and note the changes.

The years have a way of slipping by with so many photos and great adventures, it was time to build a new photography website.  After much contemplation, I was able to narrow down my files from the thousands  of photographs collected over the years.
Welcome to my new Bonnie Rannald's Reflecting Nature's Artistry Website that is Google Compliant, Mobile Friendly and  "Responsive".

Photo-adventures with Wild Burros

Long ears and shaggy manes looking out over the sage brush

Heading out to no-man’s land in the desert looking for adventure and much to my surprise there against the horizon was a large group of wild burros.  The area where I was driving was the road that ran near Garfield Flats.  Garfield Flats has desolate topography with some interesting rock outcroppings that were formed from volcanism.

http://www.bonnierannald.com

On my previous trips I had not encountered much wildlife except for birds, lizards and a sole coachwhip snake.  Coming upon this many wild burros was a rare treat.  Not too far in the distance and at a higher elevation lies the Marietta Wild Burro Range. I thought maybe the burros were seeking lower ground with the cold fronts that were forecast later in the week.

http://www.bonnierannald.com

Concerned that my truck might scare the burros, I stopped and took several photos before I drove any closer. The road ran right past to where the burros were grazing so I decided to continue slowly forward.  To my relief, most of the burros kept their heads down and did not stop eating.

http://www.bonnierannald.com

Being curious animals, several burros stopped eating and watched with ears forward to determine what I was up to.  This is when a zoom lens is mighty useful.

http://www.bonnierannald.com

Wild burros are not true native desert creatures but were brought over to the Desert Southwest by the Spaniards in the 1500’s.  They were originally from Africa and known as the Wild Ass.  These present day wild burros reach a height of around 5 feet and were valued as pack animals.   Being sure-footed, these hardy creatures can carry heavy burdens and go for days in the hot desert without water.

http://www.bonnierannald.com

The diet of wild burros which consists mainly of native desert grasses along with  Mormon Tea and Plantain will provide the animals with moisture.  However, wild burros are known to stay within 10 miles of a water source.   They can endure up to a 30% loss of  body weight in water and then replenish it in 5 minutes.

http://www.bonnierannald.com

A few of the female burros were filled out and almost appeared to be pregnant, which is unusual this late in the season. I noticed one foal that was still trying to nurse.  The temperatures for this autumn have been very mild, however colder weather is sure to come

http://www.bonnierannald.com

These burros are fortunate to reside in an area that has been designated for them.  Although wild burros are protected wildlife under the 1971Wild and Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act (Public Law 92-195) they still face many challenges with life in the open desert.

http://www.bonnierannald.com

As the sun dropped to a low angle, it was time to leave the burros and head back before nightfall.  I look forward to a return visit but that might not be till spring depending on how much snowpack the winter brings.

http://www.bonnierannald.com

Follow my blog and check back often to see where my next photo-adventure will go.  Part of the thrill is just allowing it to happen, like with the wild burros.

Photographing the 2016 Supermoon

The moon shines bright over Walker Lake

Catching a big moon rising over the mountains at Walker Lake is always a special thrill and what can be more exciting when it is a Supermoon.

When I learned of the Supermoon that was to be in November, 2016 I kept checking the weather and hoping for a clear night with calm wind.  Sure enough, the weather was just about perfect and I only needed a lightweight jacket.

The moon was forecast to rise at 5:21 PST, so I arrived early to my favorite viewing spot and got all set up with my heavy Bogen tripod as level as possible on the rocky mountainside.

The sun had already set but was casting enough light to give subtle color to the thin clouds.  While I was waiting for the moon to rise, I took an exposure of the Gillis Mountains creating interesting reflections on the still water with a shutter speed of 1/40 second at f/5.6.

http://www.bonnierannald.com

Approximately 17:43, 5:43 PST, the supermoon began to peek over the Gillis Mountains to the east of Walker Lake; I adjusted my shutter speed up to 1/60 second.

http://www.bonnierannald.com

I decided to photograph with my Nikon 80-200mm 2.8 zoom lens so that I could crop in on the moon and then zoom out for a wider angle view.  On Manual Mode, I bracketed the exposures so that the highlights in the moon would not be overexposed.  I then adjusted the mountains and water to appear lighter with post-processing in Lightroom. Once the moon was up over the mountains, I increased my shutter speed to 1/200 second to adjust for the brightness of the moon.

http://www.bonnierannald.com

The moon gained just enough elevation to begin its glow on the calm lake water.

http://www.bonnierannald.com

Ascending a little higher and the moon glow streamed across the water.

http://www.bonnierannald.com

One final shot on this November 13th night and I exposed for 1/400 second as the moon rose behind clouds.

http://www.bonnierannald.com

I returned for a second try on the following night of November 14th however the moon came up later at 18:39, 6:39 PST and the sky was growing dark.  Without the additional light falling on the landscape from dusk, I had to decide whether to expose for the bright moon or the dark foreground.  I exposed for the bright moon at 1/400 seconds and allowed the landscape to go dark.

http://www.bonnierannald.com

The best time for moonscape photography is to catch the moon when it rises and the sky is light enough to show the details in the landscape.  I follow Intellicast.com not only for weather updates but also to keep informed on times for sunrises, sunsets and the phases of the moon.
