Supermoon, June 2013

Moon Chasing at Walker Lake, Nevada

One of my favorite scenes at Walker Lake is watching the full moon rise over the Gillis Mountains to the east.  Whether it is the higher elevation:  4,331 feet (1,320 m) or the clear, cloudless sky, the full moon always looks much bigger than life. 

This June of 2013, the full moon seemed much larger due to its closest encounter with the Earth, which is termed "perigee" full moon by astronomers.  In its early phases on June 21st, the moon stands out over the Gillis Mountains around 20:07pdt or 8:07pm.  The power poles running up through the mountains give perspective to the Supermoon as it accents the early evening sky. The popular title of Supermoon did not come from astronomy but was coined by Astrologer Richard Nolle.

  A return on June 22nd for more moon chasing and I catch the moon with my Nikon 500mm 4.0 as it just begins to rise over the Gillis Mountains.   

A few minutes later and the Supermoon appears to be waiting on top of the mountain. 

Changing lenses for a wider angle, my Nikon 80-200mm 2.8 tracks the moon ascending higher over the mountains just as the sun's light begins to fade.  

A storm moved in on June 23rd, with clouds that blocked out most of the Supermoon.  However the play of moonlight on the clouds still made for an interesting evening of photos.

49th. International Photo Fair

The 49th. Foire Internationale de la Photo

 

The 49th. International Photo Fair is taking place this weekend, June 2--3 in Bièvres, France, approximately 12 miles south of Paris.  I am very fortunate to have a number of my Nevada photographs that were selected for exhibit and purchase at this year's 2012 event.  Included in the selected images are scenes unique to the Western United States of wild horses running free across the desert range and big full moons rising over mountain tops.  I will be sharing booth 48 with France's Abstract and Macro Photographer, Lyza Sahertian.

 The 49th. Foire Internationale de la Photo is known as "the Mecca of photography" since it draws thousands of professional and amateur camera enthusiasts from every continent who come together to spend two days in a friendly atmosphere to conduct business or to share their passion for photography.  Organized by the Photo Club de Paris Val de Bievre with the assistance of the City of Bièvres and the General Council of Essonne, the International Photo Fair is the largest of this type in Europe, offering over 300 stalls with lectures and events throughout the weekend.

Supermoon of 2012

Moon Glow at Walker Lake

On the evening of May 5, 2012, at 8:34 p.m. the biggest and brightest full moon of the year shined across Walker Lake. Called the Supermoon due its elliptical orbit passing closer to Earth, our celestial neighbor was 15,300 miles closer and appeared to look much bigger especially when it was low to the horizon.

  A shutter speed of 1/4000 second and spot metering brought out the details in the bright moon and also the stars in the background.

As the Supermoon reaches higher in the sky, it becomes brighter since the sun light has less atmosphere to travel through.

 The red or yellow coloring of the moon is caused from the amount of  dust or haze in the air.  The weather in Northern Nevada has been so dry and windy that our Supermoon appeared with a gold cast.

Getting photographs of the full moon when it appears in the dark sky is difficult due to the difference in lighting between the bright moon and the dark landscape.  Exposure and fill light were adjusted in Lightroom to bring out the details in the water with this photo.

The morning after, the Supermoon shines bright in the west sky as it sets over the Wassuk Mountain Range.
